Youth Groups Convene in Abuja for Green Action Challenge on Climate Accountability

By Salami Abdulrahaman | Abuja

ABUJA – Youth groups and climate advocates converged in Abuja on Monday, August 17, 2026, for the Green Action Challenge Convening, aimed at strengthening youth-led climate action, community accountability and practical responses to environmental challenges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The one-day convening, held at CODE Hall, Bassan Plaza, Abuja, and supported by ActionAid Nigeria and YouthHubAfrica, brought together young people and community stakeholders to identify pressing environmental problems, design practical interventions and develop policy recommendations for relevant authorities.

The programme focused on equipping participants with knowledge and tools to engage duty-bearers and generate evidence for community-level climate action.

Key Sessions and Outcomes

In a session on Climate Justice and Youth Accountability in the FCT, Mr. Aliyu Sadiq highlighted the unequal burden of climate and environmental challenges on communities. He stressed the need for youth-generated evidence to demand accountability from authorities.

Another session, “Reimagining Youth Action on Climate Change,” reviewed climate and environmental initiatives already being implemented by young people across Nigeria. Participants shared lessons, successes and challenges to inform stronger future interventions.

A major highlight was the presentation by six youth teams. Each team documented a community problem, identified affected populations and root causes, reviewed existing responses and proposed practical, evidence-based solutions.

Participants then broke into teams to develop two-day community action plans. The plans included community entry strategies, engagement with traditional leaders and Area Council structures, volunteer mobilisation, required materials, permissions and risk mitigation measures.

Organisers also emphasised documentation and safeguarding protocols, including before-and-after photographs, records of community members reached, testimonials, consent forms and other evidence needed to demonstrate impact.

Next Steps

A key output of the convening was a recommendation paper capturing community findings, youth actions, results and policy recommendations for the FCT Administration, FCT Environment Secretariat, FCT Youth Secretariat and Area Councils.

Participants were expected to implement their proposed community actions and document the outcomes. The findings would feed into final recommendations and advocacy activities scheduled for August 21, 2026.

Speaking on the goal of the initiative, the organisers said the Green Action Challenge seeks to move young people “beyond discussions about climate change towards practical, evidence-based community action capable of influencing decision-makers and improving environmental outcomes.
