Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has allocated 1,000 hectares of land for the establishment of a permanent Nigerian Air Force (NAF) facility at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, as part of efforts to strengthen security and boost the airport’s operational capacity.
Oyebanji made this known on Thursday during a working visit to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Yinka Oyebode, in a statement, said the Governor, who was received with a ceremonial parade on arrival at about 9:35am, said the provision of the expansive land, backed with a Certificate of Occupancy, underscores the state government’s readiness to support the full deployment and operational presence of the Air Force at the airport.
He explained that the move is strategic to safeguarding the state, protecting critical infrastructure, and maximising the economic potential of the airport.
“We have made available over 1,000 hectares of land to the Air Force, and the Certificate of Occupancy is ready. I am here personally to demonstrate our commitment to this collaboration,” Oyebanji said.
Highlighting the importance of the partnership, the Governor noted that Ekiti’s airport ranks among the most modern in the country, with pilots attesting to the quality of its runway and facilities.
He added that the Instrument Landing System (ILS) would be ready by next month, further enhancing flight operations.
“Ekiti boasts one of the most modern airports in the country. To sustain this standard and ensure optimal functionality, we must deepen collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force. We are ready to provide all necessary assets to enhance security, boost investor confidence, and improve airport operations,” he added.
Oyebanji also commended the Nigerian Air Force for its professionalism and dedication in safeguarding lives and critical infrastructure across the country, noting that their presence would further strengthen security architecture in Ekiti State.
In his response, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Aneke, lauded the Governor’s proactive approach to infrastructure development and security, describing the initiative as a reflection of visionary leadership.
He expressed the Air Force’s readiness to deepen its partnership with Ekiti State, not only to secure the airport and other key assets but also to support broader economic and regional development goals.
Aneke disclosed that the NAF is already engaging with international partners on plans to establish an aircraft repair and overhaul centre at the Ekiti airport, a development he said would significantly enhance the airport’s capacity, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the state’s aviation ecosystem.
He further praised Oyebanji’s leadership style, noting that his strategic initiatives would have lasting impacts on the state’s development trajectory.
“Your development strides are commendable. Only a strategic mind can achieve what you are doing, and generations yet unborn will appreciate your efforts,” he said.
Dignitaries at the meeting included the lawmaker representing Ekiti South Federal Constituency I, AVM Rufus Adeniyi Ojuawo (Rtd); Commissioner for Finance, Mr Akintunde Oyebode; Technical Adviser on Airport Project, AVM Sunday Makinde (Rtd); Special Adviser on Media, Mr Yinka Oyebode; and Mr O’Seun Odewale.
