Oluwatuyi Signs Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Law 2025 into Effect.

The Executive Chairman of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government, Hon. Gbenga Oluwatuyi, on Monday signed the Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law 2025 into effect, reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives, rights, and welfare of citizens across the council area.

Performing the constitutional duty at the local government secretariat, Hon. Oluwatuyi described the new law as a landmark achievement, stressing that it represents a decisive step in strengthening the fundamental right to life, curbing gender-based abuses, and safeguarding vulnerable groups.

“This law is a bold declaration that our local government will no longer tolerate any form of gender-based violence. It provides a solid legal framework to protect victims, punish offenders, and ensure justice. With it, all relevant agencies and committees now have the full legal backing to discharge their responsibilities effectively,” the Chairman said.

Hon. Oluwatuyi also pledged that his administration would ensure the full implementation and enforcement of the provisions of the law, noting that it will go a long way in addressing the rising cases of gender-based violence within the local government. He commended members of the Legislative Council for their commitment in thoroughly scrutinizing the bill and ensuring its smooth passage through all necessary legislative processes.

Similarly, the Leader of the House, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government, Hon. Olagunju Yemisi, lauded the development, describing it as a significant step toward restoring moral values and social order in the society. She emphasized that the law is designed not only to prohibit all forms of gender-based violence but also to provide maximum protection for victims, effective remedies, and appropriate punishments for offenders.

With the signing of the Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law 2025, the council has taken a historic step in aligning with national and global best practices in combating gender-based violence, promoting dignity, and ensuring security for every citizen.
