Renewed Hope Solarisation Project to strengthen electricity supply, support academic activities at EKSU
Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, has secured a major intervention under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda Solarisation Project with the provision and installation of a 1MW solar mini-grid for electricity generation at the University.
The project, valued over a billion naira is being implemented under the auspices of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) as part of efforts to expand alternative energy sources and improve reliable electricity supply to critical institutions.
A letter of award issued by the Office of the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, confirms the award of the contract to Lightfeed Global Services Limited for the provision and installation of the solar mini-grid for power generation at Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.
The project is expected to significantly strengthen the University’s energy infrastructure and provide a more reliable and sustainable source of electricity for teaching, research, administration and other critical operations.
The Vice-Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Professor Joseph Babatola Ayodele, lauded the intervention, describing it as a landmark development with the potential to positively transform the University’s power situation.
Professor Ayodele commended the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, for his administration’s continued commitment to the development of EKSU and for facilitating opportunities capable of attracting strategic interventions to the University.
He noted that reliable electricity remains critical to the effective functioning of a modern university, particularly in an era where teaching, research, digital learning, laboratory activities and administrative processes are increasingly technology-driven.
The Vice-Chancellor said the solar project aligns with the University’s vision of building a modern, resilient and environmentally sustainable institution, adding that the intervention would complement other efforts by the University Management to improve infrastructure and enhance the overall university experience.
Professor Ayodele further appreciated the Federal Government and the Energy Commission of Nigeria for including EKSU among institutions benefiting from the Renewed Hope Agenda Solarisation Project.
He said the University would continue to explore strategic partnerships with government agencies, development institutions, alumni and other stakeholders towards securing interventions that would advance the University’s infrastructure and academic mission.
The project, which has a stipulated completion period of three months from the date of the award, represents another significant step towards addressing the energy needs of EKSU and reducing dependence on conventional sources of electricity.
The intervention also underscores the importance of collaboration among the Federal Government, the State Government and the University in delivering sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting education and institutional development.
For EKSU, the 1MW solar mini-grid is more than a power project; it is an investment in uninterrupted learning, stronger research capacity, digital innovation and a more sustainable future for the University.
