By Sunday Olatunji, Ado-Ekiti

Directors of Information and Civic Orientation as well as Community and Social Development in Ekiti State have commended the Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission (ELGSC) for prioritising continuous training and retraining of its workforce.

They said the regular organisation of seminars and workshops by the Commission had contributed significantly to broadening the knowledge, skills and professional competence of local government workers, thereby preparing them for more effective service delivery at the grassroots.

The Directors made the commendation on Friday through the coordinators of the two departments at the closing of a two-day capacity-building workshop on “Strengthening Information Management, Community Engagement and Participatory Development for Effective Local Government Service Delivery,” held at the Ezekiel Ogutuase Multi-Purpose Hall, Onigari, Ado-Ekiti.

The workshop brought together Directors of Information and Civic Orientation as well as Community and Social Development from the 16 Local Governments and 22 Local Council Development Areas in the state.

The Directors lauded the Commission, under the chairmanship of Chief Samuel Abejide, for initiatives aimed at improving the capacity, career development and welfare of local government employees.

They particularly acknowledged the Commission’s sponsorship of workers pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate education in tertiary institutions, regular conduct of promotion exercises, prompt release and implementation of promotion letters, as well as conversion and advancement exercises and other opportunities designed to enhance professional growth within the local government service.

The coordinators, Mr. Adegboyega Afolabi and Mr. Wumi Agabanigo, described the workshop as timely and relevant, noting that the knowledge acquired would enhance the participants’ ability to respond to the evolving demands of local government administration.

The Directors also commended the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, for his sustained support for the local government service, citing the construction of a modern office complex for the Commission as part of efforts to provide a more conducive working environment for its workforce.

They further acknowledged the recent recruitment of both unified and non-unified staff by the state government, describing the initiative as a measure that would strengthen the workforce, create employment opportunities and improve service delivery at the grassroots.

They added that the establishment of new departments within the local government service had opened up additional career opportunities for workers while strengthening the capacity of the councils to respond effectively to the needs of the people.

The Directors pledged to translate the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop into improved performance in their respective offices, while urging their colleagues to share the lessons learned with their subordinates for greater organisational impact.
