A truck conveying breweries from Ilesha to Ado-Ekiti had an accident along the New Iyin road while trying to navigate a bend leading to Okesha Junction.
The accident, which occurred in the early hours of today, was as a result of a busted back tire. This incident led to the loss of at least sixty crates of different brands of beer.
Speaking to the driver of the truck, Ojo Ade, he stated that no lives were lost and the only casualties recorded were broken bottles and some damage to the truck.
According to him, “I was on my way to Ado-ekiti from Ilesha when I heard a screeching sound from the back of the truck and before I knew it, the truck was bending to one side. I narrowly escaped death, and I thank God that at the time of the incident, no passerby was around, and also it happened in an environment where help can easily be accessed”.
The owner of the brewery company, Omole Brewery International Limited, though anonymous, explained that “the incident happened a few minutes after the driver had delivered the goods to the customers and was returning to the company.”
He added that he appreciates the swift response of the Ekiti State Divisional Police Officers in charge of New Iyin Road and its environs for responding immediately and helping to control the traffic, thereby ensuring that the incident does not obstruct other road users from plying the route.
In a brief interview with Adeyemi Tunde, the Chief Operation Officer, Ekiti State Waste Management, on the measures that would be adopted to ensure that the place is properly cleaned to avoid causing further harm to road users.
He responded that “When I received the call on what happened, I came down immediately with my team to handle the situation but the truck owner has given the assurance that he will get people to fix it.”
Nevertheless, I have asked my team to be on guard to ensure that the place is clean as it is supposed to be and all cleaning measures will be adhered to, he added.
Adamu Ade, a motorist who witnessed the incident, pleaded with truck drivers to reduce their speed when trying to navigate a bend or a U-turn. He urges truck owners to correctly educate their drivers on proper road usage rules.
