By Daniel Abe

Students of the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Venite University, Iloro-Ekiti, have gained firsthand experience of the Nigerian criminal justice system following an academic field visit to the Ekiti State High Court and the Ekiti State Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti.

The visit, held on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, was organised by the Academic Engagement and Linkages Committee of the university as part of efforts to expose students to practical applications of the knowledge acquired in the classroom.

At the Ekiti State High Court, the students observed court proceedings and gained practical insight into the administration of justice. They witnessed the processes involved in calling cases, presentation of evidence, fair hearing and the application of the rule of law.

The students also visited the Ekiti State Police Headquarters, where they received practical lessons on crime prevention, community policing, professional crime management and responsible citizenship.

The exercise, according to the university, was designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice by giving students direct exposure to institutions responsible for justice, law enforcement and public safety.

Speaking during the visit, the representative of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ayo Atunramu, commended the Ekiti State Judiciary and the Ekiti State Police Command for supporting the university’s efforts to provide students with practical learning opportunities.

He stressed the importance of exposing students to real-world professional environments, noting that such experiences complement classroom teaching and better prepare graduates for the challenges of their chosen careers.

“Learning should not be confined to the four walls of the classroom. Our students need to see, experience and understand how the theories they learn are applied in the real world,” Dr. Atunramu said.
He added that partnerships between universities and relevant professional institutions were essential to producing graduates with the practical knowledge and skills required to make meaningful contributions to society.

The delegation comprised the Chairman of the Academic Engagement and Linkages Committee, the representative of the Vice-Chancellor, the Dean of the College of Arts, Social and Management Sciences, the Heads of Programme for Criminology and Security Studies and Mass Communication, as well as other members of the Linkages Committee.

The visit further underscored Venite University’s commitment to experiential learning, industry engagement and quality education, with the institution emphasising the need to equip its students with both academic knowledge and practical experience.

The university said such initiatives would continue to form part of its efforts to prepare students to thrive in the workplace and contribute responsibly to national development.
