IJERO SECURITY MEETING: COUNCIL COMMENDS SECURITY AGENCIES, CALLS FOR SUSTAINED VIGILANCE

By Olukayode Simonpeter

Ijero Local Government has commended security agencies operating within the council area for their proactive intelligence, dedication and collaborative efforts toward maintaining peace and security across the Local Government.

The commendation was made at the September 2026 monthly security meeting of Ijero Local Government, presided over by the Director of Administration, Mr. Laolu Tosin, on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Julius Abayomi Folowosele, who was away on an official assignment.

Welcoming representatives of the various security agencies to the meeting, Mr. Laolu conveyed the Chairman’s appreciation for their continued commitment to the protection of lives and property, noting that their efforts had contributed significantly to the relative peace being enjoyed across Ijero Local Government.

He urged the security personnel to remain vigilant and proactive, stressing that the responsibility of maintaining peace requires constant intelligence gathering, cooperation and prompt response to emerging security challenges.

The Department of State Services (DSS), in its report, appealed to the Local Government Council to facilitate the reopening and rehabilitation of the abandoned police post at Ara-Ekiti.

According to the DSS representative, the police post is strategically important as it serves not only Ara-Ekiti but also the wider Ekameta axis, including Apẹ and Araromi-Ekiti.

The agency called for the facility to be properly assessed and restored to functionality to strengthen security coverage within the area.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) also reported the arrest of three suspected drug dealers currently in its custody. The agency disclosed that the suspects were undergoing orientation and rehabilitation as part of measures to address drug-related activities and prepare them for reintegration into society where appropriate.

The representative of the fire service appealed to the Council Chairman to urgently address critical needs at the fire station, particularly the provision of a functional borehole and provision of fire-fighting equipment and engines ahead of the next dry season.

The representative stressed the importance of adequate preparedness to respond effectively to fire emergencies, particularly during the dry season when the risk of fire outbreaks is heightened.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), while presenting its report, called on the Local Government to intensify public sensitisation against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways.

The Corps noted that the continuous dumping of refuse in water channels could obstruct the free flow of water and aggravate flooding and other environmental challenges.
Other security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Immigration Service, Amotekun Corps and Peace Corps, also presented reports on security and safety developments within their respective areas of responsibility.

Responding to the various reports, Mr. Laolu Tosin attributed the positive security reports to the proactive intelligence and commitment of the security agencies.

He commended the agencies for their cooperation and urged them not to relent in their efforts, stressing the need for continued vigilance, intelligence sharing and effective inter-agency collaboration.

The meeting also featured a solemn moment when the Divisional Police Officer, Ijero Division, informed the gathering of the death of DSP Omotayo Ajide, who reportedly died in active service following gunshot injuries sustained during an encounter with armed robbers at Ayegunle-Ekiti.

The DPO further informed the meeting that he would be bowing out of active service on Thursday, October 1, 2026, after years of service in the Nigeria Police Force.

In his response, the Director of Administration, on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Julius Abayomi Folowosele, and the entire management of Ijero Local Government, congratulated the outgoing DPO and wished him good health, fulfilment and success in retirement.

Mr. Laolu also encouraged the retiring police officer to continue contributing to the development of the Nigeria Police Force by mentoring younger officers and sharing his wealth of experience with those he would be leaving behind.

He urged him to also extend such mentorship to incoming officers, guiding and nurturing them toward the pinnacle of their careers.

The September security meeting ended with a renewed commitment by the Local Government and the various security agencies to strengthen collaboration, sustain vigilance and consolidate the peace and security being enjoyed by residents of Ijero Local Government.
