For many years beyond memory, residents living around the Alarinko River axis in Odo – Uri quarter, Igede Ekiti, within Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, endured untold hardship occasioned by devastating floods. Successive administrations had made promises aimed at easing movement and addressing the perennial flooding challenge, yet those assurances remained largely unfulfilled, leaving homes, schools, churches, and livelihoods vulnerable to destruction.
The relentless overflow of the Alarinko River, in Odo – Uri quarter had become a recurring nightmare for residents,
during every rainy season, families lived in fear as floodwaters encroached upon their homes, disrupted worship activities in churches, and posed serious threats to educational activities at Community School B Nursery and Primary School, Odo – Uri among other affected institutions.
Despite years of persistent appeals and passionate advocacy by community members, the common response from leaders had often been that there were insufficient funds to undertake such a massive intervention.
Nevertheless, the resilient and patient residents continued to hope for a lasting solution.
Today, that hope is gradually becoming a reality.
In a remarkable demonstration of responsive and people-oriented leadership, the Executive Chairman of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government, Honourable Oluwatuyi Oluwagbenga, popularly known as CHENCO, alongside his goal-driven team, has commenced the excavation and clearing of the Alarinko River channel, in Odo- Uri, Igede Ekiti.
This strategic intervention reflects his administration’s unwavering commitment to addressing critical community challenges and improving the quality of life of the people.
The project is aimed at providing lasting relief to residents by reducing the risk of flooding, protecting lives and properties, and creating a safer environment for educational and religious activities within the affected communities.
Speaking on the significance of the intervention, the Chairman emphasized that:
“This project is not just about clearing a waterway; it is about protecting lives, safeguarding properties, ensuring that our children learn in a safer and more conducive environment, and restoring peace of mind to our people.”
He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to practical governance, stressing that meaningful leadership is measured by tangible actions that positively impact the lives of the people. According to him, fostering safe, resilient, and vibrant communities remains a cardinal objective of his administration.
Honourable Oluwatuyi Oluwagbenga also acknowledged the inspiring leadership of the Governor of Ekiti State, His Excellency, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO), whose developmental strides and inclusive governance continue to serve as a model for public office holders across the state. The Governor’s exceptional achievements have earned him widespread recognition and admiration as the “Jinx-Breaking Governor” of Ekiti State.
The atmosphere within the Alarinko River community was filled with excitement and renewed optimism as residents trooped out in large numbers to witness the commencement of the historic project.
For many, it marked the beginning of a new chapter—one characterized by hope, safety, and sustainable development.
Community members openly expressed gratitude to God for bringing Honourable Oluwatuyi Oluwagbenga to the helm of affairs in the Local Government.
They offered prayers for divine wisdom, strength, and continued success for the Chairman, while commending his proactive approach to governance and his willingness to tackle long-standing challenges.
Many residents also pledged their unwavering support for the administration, promising to intensify grassroots mobilization efforts and embark on extensive house-to-house campaigns in support of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji ahead of the forthcoming election.
Indeed, the Alarinko River excavation project stands not merely as an infrastructural intervention but as a powerful symbol of purposeful leadership, responsive governance, and a shared commitment to building stronger, safer, and more prosperous communities across Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area.
As the heavy machinery continues its work and the river channel gradually regains its capacity, one message resonates across the community: when leadership meets compassion, promises become projects, projects become realities, and realities transform lives.
