Ijero-Ekiti township in Ekiti State was on Wednesday, 11th February 2025, thrown into distress following a fierce stormy rainfall that swept across the area, leaving several houses and shops destroyed and residents counting heavy losses.

The storm, accompanied by violent winds and torrential rainfall, lasted for several hours and caused widespread destruction across different parts of the town. Rooftops were violently ripped off residential buildings, weak structures collapsed, while floodwaters submerged major streets and commercial centres.
Several shops, especially those located in low-lying areas and along major roads, were badly affected, with goods worth millions of naira reportedly destroyed. In many neighbourhoods, residential buildings were rendered uninhabitable as roofs were completely blown away, forcing affected families to seek temporary shelter.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as sudden and frightening, noting that many residents had little or no time to secure their properties before the storm struck. Traders were seen struggling to salvage whatever remained of their goods amid the wreckage.

As at the time of filing this report, no loss of life had been officially recorded. However, many families were displaced, while economic activities within the township were temporarily disrupted.

Reacting to the incident, the Executive Chairman of Ijero Local Government, Hon. Julius Abayomi Folowosele, sympathize with the affected residents and assured them of the council’s swift intervention to mitigate the impact of the disaster.

Hon. Folowosele expressed deep concern over the extent of the damage and pledged that the local government would collaborate with relevant state emergency management agencies to provide relief materials and necessary support to victims. He also assured residents that proactive measures would be taken to address drainage challenges and other environmental issues to prevent future occurrences.

Meanwhile, residents have appealed to the Ekiti State Government and relevant emergency agencies for urgent intervention, while community leaders urged calm as assessment of the affected areas continues.
