EKSU Ranks 12th Best University in Nigeria: A New Era of Academic Excellence

Ekiti State University, popularly known as EKSU, has once again proven that consistent investment in quality education yields remarkable results. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, EKSU has emerged as the 12th best university in Nigeria, surpassing several long-established institutions such as Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Lagos State University (LASU), Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), University of Benin (UNIBEN), and others that many still celebrate based on past glory.

This achievement is not only historic but also symbolic. It reflects the steady transformation taking place within EKSU, a university that has gradually repositioned itself through improved academic standards, research output, infrastructure development and staff capacity building. For a state university to outperform some federal and first-generation institutions on a global ranking platform speaks volumes about the seriousness of its leadership and academic community.
Last year, when EKSU emerged as the best state university in Nigeria and also ranked ahead of OAU, the news generated mixed reactions across the academic community. While many applauded the progress, some alumni and supporters of older universities dismissed the result as a fluke. A few argued that rankings could not erase decades of prestige and tradition. Others believed the outcome was merely temporary and would soon reverse.

Today, the new ranking tells a different story.
EKSU’s rise is no longer an accident or coincidence; it is becoming a pattern of excellence. Repeating such performance on an internationally recognized ranking platform confirms that the institution is steadily building a reputation based on measurable academic performance rather than sentimental attachment to history.
Universities are no longer judged solely by their age or fame. Global rankings now emphasize critical indicators such as teaching quality, research impact, international outlook, innovation and societal relevance. Institutions that fail to adapt to these evolving standards risk being overtaken by younger, more agile universities that embrace modernization, accountability, and performance-driven policies.

EKSU’s advancement suggests that the university is making deliberate efforts to strengthen research culture, encourage staff development, expand academic collaborations, and improve learning facilities. These are the foundations of a globally competitive institution. When students receive quality education in a conducive environment, their productivity increases, and the institution’s reputation naturally grows.

This development should also serve as a wake-up call to other universities that have relied heavily on historical reputation. Past achievements, while admirable, cannot sustain relevance in a rapidly changing academic world. Institutions must continuously innovate, invest in technology, promote impactful research, and prioritize student-centered learning if they intend to remain competitive nationally and globally.

For Ekiti State, this ranking is a source of pride and encouragement. It demonstrates that meaningful progress is achievable when education is treated as a strategic investment rather than a political obligation. The success of EKSU strengthens the state’s image, attracts partnerships, and motivates young people to pursue higher education with renewed confidence.
To the skeptics who once dismissed EKSU’s earlier ranking as accidental, this new recognition provides an opportunity for reflection. Excellence is not inherited; it is earned and sustained through consistent effort. Rather than dismissing emerging institutions, stakeholders across the Nigerian education sector should encourage healthy competition, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Ultimately, this achievement is not just a victory for EKSU but a positive signal for Nigerian higher education. It proves that with dedication, visionary leadership, and accountability, universities can rise above limitations and compete favorably on the global stage.
As EKSU continues its upward trajectory, the responsibility now lies with its management, staff, students, alumni, and government to sustain and even surpass this performance. Maintaining standards is often more challenging than achieving them. Continuous investment in research funding, staff welfare, infrastructure, digital resources, and academic integrity will be critical.

Indeed, the story of EKSU reminds us that the future belongs to institutions willing to evolve, adapt, and pursue excellence relentlessly not those merely living on past glory.
